Breast Procedures - Breast Augmentation
Breast AugmentationThis surgery is ideal for the woman who would like larger breasts, or correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy. Procedure:The incision can be made either in the breast crease, around the areola or in the armpit. Through this incision, the Dr. Platis will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket directly behind your breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle. Saline implants will be placed in this pocket and centered beneath your nipples. Recovery:You will be up and around in 24 to 48 hours, but probably quite sore at this point. The pain can be controlled by medication prescribed by your Dr. Platis. Although at first your skin may seem tight and your breasts may seem quite full on top, within a few weeks your skin relaxes giving your breasts a full but natural look. You will be able to return to work in just a few days. In about four weeks you will be back to normal activity. Frequently Asked Questions:Which is better placement of the implant, behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle? The answer may be different for different women. In general, Dr. Platis prefers to place the implant behind the chest wall muscles because this ultimately gives a much more natural result. Are "anatomically-shaped" or "tear-drop shaped" implants better than round implants? Again, the answer may be different for different women. Dr. Platis uses many different shapes and textures for his implants depending upon which would look most natural for his patients. What if the implant leaks? The implant is filled with saline fluid (the same fluid that we use for intravenous solutions) so if it leaks, it will be absorbed naturally by your body. The implant manufacturer will replace your implant at no cost if replacement is ever necessary. Will this affect breastfeeding? No. Will I still be able to get mammograms? Yes. Will it change my nipple sensation? There may be a temporary increase or decrease in sensitivity, but the chance for any permanent change is very small.
Breast LiftA breast lift can restore a more youthful appearance by lifting sagging and pendulous breasts. Procedure:This procedure is often combined with a breast augmentation. It can be performed on women with any size breasts. Techniques for this procedure vary but one of the most common procedures involves an anchor-shaped incision. Excess skin is removed and the areola is lifted to a higher position. The result is higher, firmer breasts. Recovery:You will be sore but up and about in a day or two. You can probably return to work in about a week. Normal activities can be resumed in about a month. Frequently Asked Questions:Are the scars unattractive? Although there will be some visible scars, the improvement in breast shape will far outweigh the appearance of any scar.
Breast ReductionWomen that have large, pendulous and often heavy breasts can bring a new proportion and comfort to their body. Procedure:An anchor-shaped incision is used to remove fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts. This is a fairly involved procedure that may take a few hours to complete. The result is firmer, smaller breasts. Recovery:The day after surgery you will want to take it easy. You will wear a support bra for several weeks following the surgery and be instructed to avoid any straining or lifting. You should be back to work in a couple a week or two and returning to normal activities within a few weeks after that. Frequently Asked Questions:Add: Will insurance help pay for this surgery? Depending upon your insurance plan, many breast reduction surgeries are covered by insurance if the woman is experiencing neck and back pain and other difficulties as a result of the weight of her breasts.
